Realistically, it’s anything that doesn’t occur in your everyday life. Maybe you have a class reunion, your child is doing a music performance, or you have a big family event. Each of those examples and more are good excuses for missing some work.

Severe weather can prevent you from commuting or knock out your internet connection. But hurricanes, tornadoes, and other dangerous events can also mean you need to evacuate on short notice. Even if you don’t evacuate, you may need to take a couple of hours off to stock up on supplies and groceries ahead of the storm. As we all know, we can’t control what life throws at us. It would be nice to know when emergencies are going to happen, but that’s not realistic.

This means you’ll have to tell more lies in the future, which isn’t great. Faulty Internet connections, childcare issues, serious illnesses, or family matters can keep you from staying productive no matter where you work. However, since your blood donation is pre-scheduled, it’s best to inform your manager the previous day, and you can then call in sick the next morning. A knee injury, a sprained ankle, etc., can make a valid excuse, as it affects your performance at work. For serious injuries involving casts or stitches, you can ask for more days off, given that you provide enough proof.
